Summer Fun: Weekend Getaways

I am always looking for family friendly things to do with the kids over the Summer. So this list is basically just a note from my own journal on things that are on our list for Summer fun. Here is a photo of my family from last summer when we were strolling around Boston. (Yes that is Lyla in the stroller…I can’t even.)

1/ Strawberry Jam – June 2, 2018 –  Columbus, Ohio

You all know I love ice cream. I love it something fierce. Strawberry ice cream has also been my ride or die flavor since I was a child. So when I found out that Jeni’s Icecream was doing a strawberry festival in Columbus Ohio…I nearly peed. How fun! How exciting! How creative! This would make the perfect weekend getaway!  There will be strawberry short cake, strawberry surprise (don’t know what that is but I guess we will find out), strawberry ice cream from Jeni’s obviously, BBQ, Cool Hot Chicken, little eater veggies, and of course fresh strawberries from Hirsch fruit farm. There will be lots for the kids to do…as if that list of food wasn’t enough to keep you busy all day!

Where to stay: The Westin Great Southern Columbus

What to see: Ohio Statehouse

Where to eat: Brassica

2/ Amelia Earhart Festival -July 19-21 – Atchison, Kansas

Is there anything better than a small town festival?! I don’t think so! So when I came across the Amelia Earhart Festival in Atchison, Kansas I knew this had to make the list. Just a short drive north of Kansas City, this festival includes everything you could think of for a weekend of family fun. An ice cream social, pancake breakfast, carnival rides, air shows, trolly rides, arts, crafts, nature interactions, fireworks, live music, and lots of history museums and exhibits.

Where to stay: If you want some experience and character…stay in one of my favorite towns nearby in Weston, MO at The Inn at Weston Landing. If you want a pool and the normal hotel experience you can’t go wrong with the Holiday Inn. But book early!

What to see: Since you are only a hop, skip, and a jump to Weston–there is ton to do there. Most of my favorite things to do are on Main Street. If you want to get out of town, go visit The Farmer’s House Market.

Where to eat: Avalon Cafe

3/ Tast of Music City Festival – June 16, 2016 – Nashville, Tennessee

If you love music, and you love food–this is the summer event for you. You will get to take a tour and taste the local food from some of Nashville’s best restaurants. The amazing thing about Nashville is there is ALWAYS something to do. You could pretty much go any weekend this summer and pack a whole weekend.

Where to stay: It wouldn’t be a visit to Nashville without getting to stay in one of these amazing properties. White’s Room and Board is a collection of cottages and houses owned by Holly Williams (daughter of Hank Jr.) and she has taken her impeccable taste and her love of family and made these places a unique experience for her guests.

What to see: Cheekwood Estate & Garden’s sits on 55 acres and has botanical gardens, a museum and more. During the weekend of the 16th there will be an outdoor art installation from an Italy based artist collective. You also can’t miss the Farmer’s Market and the Peach Truck while you are there.

Where to eat: Germantown Cafe, 5th & Taylor, The Christie Cookie Co.

I hope you will get you and your family out of the house this summer, and go find some adventure in a new city or small town.
