See what I did there? I acted like I own a salsa company or something! No, I in fact do not own a salsa company. But when my favorite salsa is out of stock EVERYWHERE it gives me all the feels and I just don’t know if I can go on. It is a very Jack and Rose moment.
We all have these simple pleasures, these daily goods that make our life a little easier or better that are all of a sudden not available. It’s hard because honestly, life is too short to eat bad salsa. In all seriousness though, we have all had to make so many changes this year and when we have to switch our brand or pick the thing that in our mind is lesser than it can be something that sticks with you.
I think it’s that way with God too. When we pick the lesser things–how we spend our time, what we focus on the most, who we spend our time with, what we expend our energy on–we often have this sad or unsettling feeling that something isn’t quite like it should be. That is because your Creator who knows exactly what is best for you, always wants what is best for you! Of course he is also so sweet he lets us choose and have free will, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt his heart a bit when we choose those lesser gifts he has so graciously provided for us.
So many times over the course of this year I have tried to let salsa…or ice cream…or pizza…or you fill in the blank…make me happy, fill my needs, and take away the hard moments that we have all been faced with. There is a hilarious meme out there that says, “You can’t make everyone happy, you aren’t tacos!” and you could fill in any thing that you turn to in your times of trouble. But if there is one thing I have learned through this crazy year it is that I shouldn’t be turning to anything other than God during these difficult moments.
God is our Defender, Peacemaker, Waymaker, Friend, Creator, Advocate, Comfortor, Cornerstone, Dayspring, Governor…God is Life. Maybe we should start living like it.
This week my prayer is even when the hard things happen and the salsa is out of stock and the kids will not CALM DOWN, you can find some peace by turning to God and letting him renew your spirit.
